File & Folder Naming Conventions

Most people now know that successful rankings in search engines are achieved not by some panacea, some trick that makes the difference, but by an accumulation of small issues. One of these is how you name your folders and files. Here are some guidelines we operate:

  • File and folder names should only be made up of lower case a to z, 0 to 9, - (hyphen) and _ (but not recommended) – no spaces, no capitals.
  • Folders should ideally be kept to 2 levels, never more than 3 – domain.com/folder1/file.html or domain.com/folder1/sub-folder1/file.html
  • File names should, within reason, contain keywords separated by hyphens NOT underscores. Ideally only 1 hyphen, not more than 2 unless absolutely unavoidable. No “particle” words – and, the, it, etc
  • So “question.html” or “ask-question.html” NOT “ask-an-online-question-if-you-want.html”! Also “web-hosting.html” NOT “webhosting.html” NOR “web_hosting.html” and NEVER “Web Hosting.html”

Hope this is useful If you want to know why or have anything to add please post a comment.

Storage & Packing Services Website

Boxes New website launched today for Central Storage who provide private and business clients in the Midlands with an unusual packing and storage service. Basically they turn up with one or more crates, pack your stuff into them and take them away to their secure storage facility where they keep them until you are ready to get them back.

When you want the items returned you make a call and Central Storage return with the cases and unpack them for you. There's a charge for collection, a charge for return, and a daily fee for storage. That's normally £1.50 but there's a special offer on at the moment of just £1 per case per day.

Seems like a hassle-free system where they do all the work. For more info on how it operates take a look at their website or email info@centralstorage.co.uk.

Dormy Hotel and Restaurant

Dormy18Really pleased to announce that we have just set live a new website for Dormy Hotel and Restaurant in Birmingham. This is a small, friendly, family run hotel on the Hagley Road, close to Birmingham City Centre. The accommodation is very affordable, the food is great and there is ample free parking and attractive gardens.

We were called in by Hazel Healey who was in fact the 4th client NetSecrets ever had back in 1998 when she worked in the auto salvage business. Seeing that this must be about the 700th website we have done since it says a lot for the success of site #4!

We think our approach to building websites for small hotels is very effective. Each one is individually researched and designed to underline the individuality of the private business. And our extensive resources for SEO and web marketing ensure that bookings rise to pay back the investment without delay.

Anyway best of luck to Hazel and her team who can be contacted by emailing info@dormyhotel.co.uk.
